The Spokesperson of UPDF in Somalia, Maj Peter Mugisa has confirmed that the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is withdrawing up to 3,000 troops in a phased manner and handing over bases to the Somalian forces.
According to Mugisha, Uganda has already withdrawn 400 soldiers in the first phase. More troops will be withdrawn in September.
“The UN Security Council resolution 2670(2022) was instructing ATMIS to drawdown in a phased manner. So far we have reduced UPDF troops in Somalia by 400. We are looking forward to participating in the withdrawal of more forces in September 2023.” Maj Peter Mugisha said.
Uganda was the first East African country to deploy troops under AMISOM into Somalia in March 2007.
