In Kikuube District, western Uganda, police have apprehended one officer and are searching for another who is reportedly on the run. The officers are accused of shooting and injuring three attendees at an introduction ceremony in Kipongo village, Kinogozu Parish, Buhimba Sub County.
The involved officers are stationed at Kinogozu Police Post and were assigned by their supervisor, AIP Nuiat Nakigozi, to provide security at the event held at the late Tibaryangire Temiseo\’s residence on Saturday.
The injured individuals have been identified as Violet Katusabe, 22, Joel Mugume, 24, and Julius Tugume, 40. They were transported to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital by good Samaritans for treatment, where their condition was reported as stable at the time the statement was issued.
Albertine Police Regional Spokesperson, Mr. Julius Allan Hakiza, stated that Police Constable (PC) Harold Mwesigwa has been arrested, while PC Denis Arinaitwe remains at large as the investigation into the shooting, which occurred at 1 pm, continues.
“We are investigating a shooting incident in which three individuals were injured. Preliminary findings indicate that during the event, police officers were attacked by a group of men armed with pangas who appeared to be agitated. Despite warning shots fired into the air by the officers, the assailants continued to approach them, resulting in the injury of three individuals,” Mr Hakiza said.
