Police in Gomba District are searching for suspects who are believed to have looted a Uganda prisons truck that was involved in a crash last week.
The truck was transporting government supplies such as posho and beans to Western Uganda prisons when it collided head-on with another truck on the Gomba-Sembabule highway.
Following the accident, many residents of Kanoni village are said to be on the run after police arrested 15 suspects who were found with items from the damaged vehicle.
Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine reported that approximately 180 bags of posho went missing from the scene, and efforts are underway to recover them.
The recovery operations have caused panic among some residents, leading others to flee their homes for several days.
Baine warned that anyone found with stolen items would be arrested, but those who turn them over to the police will not face charges.
The accident claimed the life of the prisons driver, No. 6483 Peter Tumwinukye, and injured another warder.
