On Wednesday, Charles Mugisha, the Assistant Accounts Officer for Kanungu District, was arrested by the Kigezi regional office of the Inspector General of Government on charges of embezzling over Ugx 218,840,000.
According to Sam Agaba, the Inspector General in charge, Mugisha will be charged with embezzlement and false accounting by a public officer, in violation of sections 19 and 22 of the Anti-Corruption Act of 2009, respectively.
Agaba explained that between June 1 and June 30, 2019, Mugisha mismanaged Shs. 218,840,000 while serving as a senior accounts assistant for Kanungu District local government, which was intended for various Ebola-related activities for the district.
Agaba further stated that in 2019, the IGG Kigezi regional office received a complaint alleging that over 218 million shillings sent to Kanungu District Local government for managing the Ebola outbreak had been mismanaged by district health officials and other officers.
Agaba noted that the investigation began immediately, but the district health officer died during the investigation.
However, the investigation continued and the IGG office determined that Mugisha had embezzled and mismanaged funds. By last evening, Mugisha was being transferred to the anti-corruption court in Kampala.
